The Systematic Targeting of Palestinian Journalists in Gaza and the West Bank

Since October 7th 2023 Israel has killed 188 Palestinian journalists in Gaza and the West Bank. That is an average of one killed every other day. This number does not include the injured , abducted or tortured. Palestinian journalists are systematically targeted by Israeli forces as they strive to document and publish evidence of war crimes, underscoring an alarming pattern of suppression aimed at silencing dissenting voices. This targeted violence extends beyond the journalists themselves, threatening and killing their family members as a means of intimidation and control. Such tactics aim to hinder the essential work of reporting, investigation and analysis that unveils human rights abuses. The consequences of these attacks serve to stifle accountability and justice, creating a chilling effect on truth-telling in an already volatile region.

Journalists are afforded specific protections under international humanitarian law, particularly in armed conflicts, to ensure their safety and the free flow of information. The Geneva Conventions emphasize that journalists engaged in gathering information on armed conflicts should be treated as civilians, provided they do not engage in acts hostile to the opposing party. Furthermore, the Additional Protocols to the Geneva Conventions explicitly recognize the critical role of journalists in documenting the realities of war, mandating that they should not be the object of attacks and should be granted access to areas of conflict. This framework aims to safeguard journalists in carrying out their essential work while promoting accountability in warfare (International Committee of the Red Cross, "The protection of journalists in armed conflict").

The Sarkha Project has meticulously gathered open-source videos and images documenting the targeting of Palestinian journalists by the Israeli military. This evidence highlights a grim reality: over 180 journalists have lost their lives, with many others suffering severe injuries, including paralysis and limb amputations.

Western mainstream media outlets have consistently failed to acknowledge or adequately cover the stories surrounding human rights violations against Palestinian journalists in Gaza and the West Bank. This lack of coverage not only marginalizes the voices of those affected but also perpetuates a distorted narrative that overlooks significant realities of the genocidal war in Gaza. As a result, the credibility of Western media is eroded on the global stage, as audiences increasingly recognize the selective reporting and biases that shape perceptions of international events.
